Notes
START:*HYPOTHESIS: Five years before Solomon's death is sufficient time in his life to obtain "seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines" (1KI 11:3) and for them to "turn his heart away" from the LORD. It also allows sufficient time for his deep introspection and repentance which he recorded in the book of Ecclesiastes. [Shulman date p83] END:*HYPOTHESIS: Five years after Jeroboam's reign began is sufficient time for him to institute his idolatrous practices (1KI 12), be warned (1KI 13), and fail to repent (1KI 13:33), resulting in Ahijah's second prophecy. [Shulman date p83]
Years are anno hominis — counted from Creation as year 1 — which is the frame the source computes in. The arithmetic behind each boundary is given above rather than assumed.
